When civilization went into hibernation, we documented knowledge.
When we needed to cross oceans, we stood up and built ships.
When we needed to cross countries, we stood up and built railroads.
When famine threatened to decimate our population, we left one of the most beautiful islands in the world to find work and food.
When our urban centers fell into crime and disorder, we stood up to protect the people.
When buildings needed operators, we stood up and kept them running.
Throughout history we have been told we are inferior, been treated like cattle, been made fun of for our drinking, and been told we need not apply.
But we are poets and engineers,
artists and architects,
dancers and civil servants.
We won the first gold medal in the modern Olympics, changed the fortune (and nickname) of an obscure college in the middle of Indiana, mastered every piece of machinery,
and every year in March, we show the world how to live life to the fullest.
We are the Irish, and I am damn proud to be one.
